Cengiz Holding Forms Global Partnership for Electric Vehicle Batteries

Cengiz Holding has unveiled a significant partnership in the sphere of electric vehicle battery development. Through its ICoNiChem facility located in London, the company has teamed up with Canadian technology firm NOVONIX to enhance the creation of nickel-based cathode active materials. Supported by the UK-Canada Critical Minerals 2024 Program, this initiative focuses on the recovery of metals from battery powders, paving the way for advancements in sustainable battery technology.

Pioneering Recycling Initiatives in the Electric Vehicle Industry

The ICoNiChem facility in Widnes, UK, aims to transform metal recycling by recovering nickel, cobalt, and lithium from waste battery powders. NOVONIX will use these extracted metals to produce cathode active materials. Supported by a £160,000 grant from the UK’s Faraday Institution, the two-year project promises to revolutionize electrochemical energy storage. By prioritizing recycling, the project seeks to notably reduce waste and offer a more sustainable battery production method.

Highlighted Benefits of the Initiative

Extensive Metal Recovery: ICoNiChem processes 250 tons of waste battery powder annually, reclaiming approximately 25 tons of valuable metals, including nickel and cobalt. This venture will bring recoverable lithium to commercial use, placing ICoNiChem among Europe’s forefront in lithium recovery.

Environmental Sustainability: As the electric vehicle market grows, recycling is crucial for reducing carbon emissions. This collaboration assists major electric vehicle markets, like the UK, in advancing environmental sustainability and fostering a greener future.
